Tutor Resources
Tutor Talks
PQALS offers “Tutor Talks” four times annually, envisioned as an opportunity for the volunteer tutors to connect with each other, and have an opportunity to explore tutoring-related topics in greater depth. PQALS welcomes topic suggestions from the volunteers and seeks presenters; either tutors with expertise to share, or knowledgeable people from the community. We recognize the challenges tutoring the very diverse clientele of the Tutoring Program and work to support tutors with the wide range of resources they need.
Talks have been delivered on topics as varied as basic grammar to understanding how IELTS exams are graded; from specific teaching resources to the range of programs the Nanaimo Multicultural Centre provides; from best strategies for helping dyslexic learners to the basics of using ChatGPT.
Becoming a Volunteer Tutor
If you have a good understanding of English, or mathematics, or computer skills, and a desire to help others in your community, tutoring is a meaningful and significant contribution. A background in teaching is not necessary, although it is appreciated! The diversity of adult learners needs a diversity of tutors, so, whatever your background, there maybe a student needing those skills!
To join the CVIJOBS Tutoring Program you would be required to take a basic tutor training course with the Program Coordinator, following course completion you will be matched with a student. The Tutoring Program supplies appropriate tutoring resources, assists in setting up a schedule, and booking space for the lessons.
Volunteers are the heart of this Program - helping people in our community to reach their learning goals, overcoming language barriers and changing lives for the better. If you would like to join in this invaluable work please email tutoringinfo@careercentre.org or call Tiana at 250-248-3205 Ext 1219
